below the green-eyed

crocodile glides, hungry

for love and apples.

The violin upon your shoulder

perched, eliciting music.

Here is the bow aloft,

just as you hold your expectation:

high, on the edge of sound;

and here disappointment

like a splinter of the violin

upon your tongue.

A sherry bottle
on the kitchen shelf,
a woman’s magazine.

These were the things
of your ambition:
parties, fitting in;

but now, without the hope
you had in them,
they are nothing.
