Julius Caesar

The Donmar Warehouse
11 January

With plastic knives and drums
they wage their war,
with prison bleach they bring
poor Caesar down;
in overalls and hooodies
they encounter Rome
and turn the streets
into a battleground.

Julius Caesar runs until 9 February at the Donmar Warehouse

Friday, 18 January 2013

The Master and Margarita

Barbican
15 January

Courage, take the ointment
and expunge your skin,

leap from the window, fly
on unseen wings above the city lights.

Take up the devil’s crown

and dance with him,

for cowardice
is now the only sin.

The Master and Margarita runs at the Barbican until 19 January

Wednesday, 16 January 2013

Fair Em

Union Theatre
12 January

As full of plots
as any blonde-haired heroine
intent upon her green-legged lover,

and as full again
with amorous confusion
as a cockney king

who roars
his hatred of deception
through his own disguise.

Fair Em is playing at the Union Theatre until 9 February

The Dark Earth and the Light Sky

Almeida
8 January

And we relive it all,
the long, high walks
and skylarks high above,

the dance and wild song,
and love as bright
and open as the sky;

then lose him once again
as he, for love of earth
and land, walks out to die.

The Dark Earth and the Light Sky runs at the Almeida until 12 January

Slava's Snowshow

Royal Festival Hall
18 December

You could say that this
is yellow clown and green,
snowfall and bubble,
broom and wink and fish,

but that would hardly capture
all the blue and gold,
the shock of water
and of whirling snow,

and at the heart of it
the one old clown, paw-eyed
and shuffling, conjuring up
the stuff of strangest dream.

Slava's Snowshow runs at the Royal Festival Hall until 7 January 2013

Father Christmas

Lyric
15 December

On Christmas Eve the sky is cold
and full of whirling snow,
but in the house it’s cosy
and the kitchen all aglow;

and Father Christmas makes it clear
he doesn’t want to go,
but still he packs his sandwiches
and takes the radio;

and out across the world he flies
reindeer and sleigh,
from London houses to igloos
and pyramids along the way,

and leaves a present everywhere
that children play,
and flies back home in time
to go to bed on Christmas day.

Father Christmas runs until 5 January at the Lyric
